Need a Better Business Strategy? Read This Before You Make a Decision

You plan it, talk about it, tell people about it, fully convince yourself it’s going to work, and then it just… doesn’t. Don’t blame the luck. Look at the strategy.

Blockbuster had the money, the customers, and the infrastructure. Netflix even offered them a partnership. They passed. Not because they lacked resources, but because nobody stopped to really think the decision through. The rest is painful history.

That’s why bad decisions made without a real strategy can quietly hide your business’s presence every single day.

So if you’re about to make a big move, just give this two minutes before you do.

A Plan on Paper Isn’t a Strategy

Okay, so this is where a lot of people get it wrong, and honestly, it’s an easy mistake to make.

A plan is basically your to-do list. A strategy is the reason that list makes any sense in the first place. You can be the most organised person in the room, checking off tasks every single day, and still be heading in completely the wrong direction.

Strategy cuts through the noise and forces you to intentionally pick what matters, what doesn’t, and who you’re building this for in the first place. Because without that clarity, you’re just busy.  And remember, busy isn’t the same as productive.

The Questions You’re Probably Skipping

Before you make any big call, go through these questions honestly:

  • Who is this actually for? (And no, “everyone” is not an answer)
  • What real problem does this solve for them?
  • What does winning look like in the next 90 days?
  • If this goes wrong, what does that cost you?
  • Are you deciding based on real data or just vibes?

Most people avoid these questions because they’re uncomfortable to sit with. And honestly? That’s exactly why their audience ignored them. But if you can’t answer them clearly, you’re probably not ready to make the move yet.

The Turning Point Most People Don’t Notice

Most strategies don’t fail dramatically, no big crash, no obvious moment. They just quietly stop working.

You try to reach everyone at once, it makes sense in your head, and then you look around and realise nothing is actually landing.  And then there’s the other trap: writing a strategy once and treating it like it’s done.

That document from eight months ago in your desk drawer isn’t a living strategy anymore. The market has shifted, your customers have moved, and if your plan hasn’t kept up, you’re navigating with an old map.

A Framework That’s Actually Simple Enough to Use

Forget the 30-slide strategy decks. Here’s something you can actually work with:

Situation → Goal → Options → Decision → Review

Where are you right now, honestly? What do you actually want to achieve? What are your realistic options to get there? Pick one and fully commit. Then set a date to check whether it’s working. That’s the whole thing. No fluff, no overcomplication.

Data or Gut Feeling, Why Not Both?

Data shows you what has already happened. Your instincts tell you what could happen. The best business decisions almost always live somewhere in between.

Look at your numbers, what’s selling, what’s not, how your customers are actually behaving. But don’t completely ignore that gut feeling either, especially when you’ve been in your industry long enough to read the room. One without the other leaves massive gaps.

Before You Make That Next Move

Just try this one thing: write down your goal, who it’s for, and what success looks like in 90 days. Three sentences. If you’re struggling to get those three sentences out, your strategy probably isn’t ready yet.

And if you want someone to actually sit with you, look at your business, and help you figure out the right direction, that’s exactly what BK Hub Ltd does. Real strategic support, no generic templates, no corporate jargon. Just honest, practical guidance built around where you are and where you actually want to go.

Because sometimes the smartest decision isn’t making one alone.
